(DETROIT FREE PRESS) - Six Detroit Tigers are headed to Citi Field in New York for the 84th Major League Baseball All-Star Game on July 16.
Third baseman Miguel Cabrera, who won the American League MVP and Triple Crown last season, was officially named a starter for the AL All-Star team today as the leading vote-getter by the fans.
Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander are the two Tigers pitchers named to the team. Scherzer is scheduled to start July 13 (Saturday) and Verlander is slated to start the next day.
Three Tigers were also named reserves: first baseman Prince Fielder, rightfielder Torii Hunter and shortstop Jhonny Peralta.
Reliever Joaquin Benoit is one of five pitchers up for the final vote online.
This is the first time Cabrera has been voted a starter and the first time a Tigers third baseman since Ray Boone in 1954.
Jose Bautista earned the third outfield spot, ousting Hunter, who had that position early in the voting.
It's the eighth All-Star Game for Cabrera (fourth in AL), sixth appearance for Verlander, fifth for both Hunter and Fielder (second in AL), second for Peralta and the first for Scherzer. It would be the first for Benoit.
Jim Leyland is the AL manager after the Tigers reached the World Series last season.
