Nunica man dies exiting driveway on 112th Avenue
An 82-year-old Nunica man died Wednesday, Dec. 27, in a two-car crash that prompted police to close a portion of 112th Avenue for several hours.
According to the Grand Haven Tribune, police said Alfred Allen Smith was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by North Ottawa Community Hospital paramedics.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies, Crockery Township firefighters and NOCH paramedics were dispatched to 112th Avenue near South Street in Nunica at 5:27 p.m. The initial information from dispatchers was that one person in one of the two vehicles involved in a crash was pinned in his smashed car and unresponsive, said Sgt. Cal Kuening of the Sheriff’s Office.
The preliminary investigation showed that Smith was pulling out of a driveway and onto 112th Avenue when his car was struck by a northbound car, Kuening said. Both cars then went off the east side of the road.
Crockery Township firefighters had to pry open Smith’s car door to access the man.
The driver of the northbound car, 44-year-old Bobby Jewett of Muskegon, was not injured in the crash.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, Keuning said.
Smith’s name was not released for several hours after the crash until his family was notified of his death.
Police closed 112th Avenue between South Street and State Road after the crash. It was reopened at about 8:15 p.m., nearly three hours after the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, Keuning said.
