Jeffrey Willis' actions inspire new legislation regarding victim impact statements
In the wake of Jeffrey Willis' sentencing in which he left the courtroom before family members spoke and later heard the audio during his transport to Jackson, Representative Holly Hughes of Montague unveiled new legislation.
The new bill would require "anyone facing a sentence of life in prison, such as murder or sexual assault, to hear the impact statements by victims or their families."
In a statement from the Representative's office, Hughes said, "Anyone convicted of such a heinous crime should be required to hear directly from family members on how their lives will be forever impacted."
Hughes intends to introduce the bill in early January 2018.
