The Village Baker started out as a bakery and small cafe, it's now a full service restaurant, bar and pizzeria. It's right off of M-104 on your way to or from Grand Haven. And what they're known for might surprise you!

Oren Rankin is the man behind all the beautiful bread at the Village Baker. "When we opened the Village Baker our idea was to be the village baker for our village of spring lake. We wanted a classic European style experience," he explained. But six years later the bakery and cafe he and his wife, Sara Rathbun, envisioned has become so much more than that.

"Village Baker is a bakery, and a restaurant, it's a little cafe and we also have a pizzeria and a full bar. Village Baker is all about great ingredients and delicious food," said Sara.

Located on M-104, this exterior tells only part of the story. "From the road you wouldn't know exactly how big we are but we have about 50 employees baking fresh pastries, bread, fresh pretzels and making our delicious food everyday," she said.

Oren's breads play a starring role in all of their sandwich offerings. "My signature loaf is my San Francisco Sourdough."

They make their pizza dough from scratch, as well as the red sauce. And while their pizzas are delicious, it's the pretzels that are their best selling item.

"They have funded a lot of our expansion and growth. We love the pretzels, our customers love the pretzels," said Oren. "They are dipped in sodium hydroxide like the ancient Bavarian technique so it gives them that big beautiful brown color that pretzels are supposed to have."

"The pretzels are wonderful, they are crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, just the right amount of salt and right now they are fresh out of the oven," said one visitor.

The place is getting rave reviews, from all ages. "The food is fantastic. So good," said one diner. "They have really good sandwiches and pizza, the cafe is really yummy and they have really good sweets," said another.
"We drove from Jenison today. We love the Village Baker because of the great atmosphere and great food."

The Village Baker is open 7 days a week. They also have a sister location, the Baker's Wife, in downtown Grand Haven. They make several deliveries of fresh baked goods (and pretzels!) there daily.
