Greater Ottawa County United Way needs help providing school supplies to local kids this fall. They're starting the annual 'stuff the bus' event throughout the county Monday.

People can donate school supplies and backpacks to any Fifth Third Bank location in Ottawa County. Loutit District Library in Grand Haven is also accepting donations.

Monetary donations can be made by texting BUS to 30306.

The drive runs through August 7.

Supplies needed:

  • backpacks
  • water bottles
  • #2 pencils
  • pens (red, blue, and black)
  • washable markers
  • dry erase markers, highlighters
  • colored pencils
  • folders
  • 3-ring binders (especially 1 1/2 inch white binders with clear view front)
  • composition books
  • glue sticks
  • pencil sharpeners
  • pencil boxes
  • erasers
  • scissors
  • Post-It Notes
  • tab dividers
  • Kleenex
  • lanyards

The supplies will be distributed to local kids in need at the end of the drive. Students can receive a free backpack at the Salvation Army in Grand Haven on August 30. But kids must be registered.

Families can register their kids to receive a free backpack at the Salvation Army location any time through August 11. Bring a birth certificate or social security card.

The Holland Salvation Army pick up is August 17. Pre-register by August 5.
