Chances are you'll either be giving or receiving a gift this holiday season. We have some tips to help you avoid a potentially awkward exchange.

Relationship expert, Dr. Megan Stubbs shares her list of 5 things to keep in mind when gift giving:

1. Who is this gift for?
Is this an individual, couple, or a family? Be considerate that whatever you give them is actually for them.

2. Check your expectations.
Remember that the art of gifting is that it is something freely given. You shouldn't have any expectations that you will be receiving something in return.

3. What kind of gift?
Is this something the person will like/use? Avoid things that may be offensive like a self help book or a gym membership UNLESS they've specifically mentioned that they'd like those things. Someone may be struggling with body image and would be offended by a scale as a gift. Also, avoid things that look cheap.

4. Don't forget about "free" gifts.
Gifting your talent and time are technically free, but can have great value. You could offer to watch someone's kids for a night or offer to take senior pictures. Be mindful of your own skill set.

5. Thank you!
Chances are you will be receiving gifts this holiday season, so don't forget to thank your gift giver.
