When it comes to scammers, one of their favorite targets is the senior community. Approximately 11% of Americans lose money or personal property to scammers through phone, internet, or door-to-door tactics. Older adults are often targets because they are often trusting, and unfamiliar with technology and the ways it can be used to access personal information and funds.

The Kent County Elder Abuse Coalition is dedicated to the elimination of elder abuse in Kent County and the surrounding areas. The group works with non-profits, government organizations and law enforcement to make that happen. You can find alerts on scams affecting seniors on their website. The organization also provides training and seminars on elder abuse and financial exploitation. You can email info@protectkentseniors.org to get more information about those.

You can report phony IRS calls by calling 1-800-366-4484 or visiting ftc.gov. You can also report false home improvement salesmen to the Better Business Bureau at 616-7744-8286 or this link.
