One Good Thing: Lumberjacks promote reading

The Muskegon Lumberjacks are investing in kids and pushing literacy.

MUSKEGON, Mich — We love hockey in West Michigan. We love it even more when the players and people within our local organizations contribute to the community. Which they all do. But, we're going to spotlight the Muskegon Lumberjacks today.

Nancy wants to recognize them for their work on children's literacy. She says the Jacks have invested more than $30,000 to promote reading for kids. They also go to area schools regularly, reading to the kids and pushing them to be good readers themselves.

The team rewards the kids too. When the kids hit certain reading goals, they can receive books, backpacks, water bottles, game tickets, t-shirts and opportunities to ride the Zamboni.

Reading is one of the true pillars we can teach our kids around which to build their lives. Thanks to the Muskegon Lumberjacks for recognizing and promoting that. They get today's One Good Thing.

If you have a One Good Thing you'd like to submit - someone or something that makes West Michigan a good place to live - email me at OneGoodThing@WZZM13.com.
