Adopt-A-Pet: Meet Thunder & Ernie at Empty the Shelters event

If you're interested in Thunder or Ernie, you can visit them at the Empty the Shelters event on Saturday, May 5 at the Humane Society of West Michigan.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Thunder is a 10-year-old Chihuahua up for adoption through the Humane Society of West Michigan. He was brought to the shelter after his owner became ill.

Thunder lives successfully with another dog at HSWM. Because Thunder is part of the Silver Paws Society, his adoption fee is waived!

Ernie (left) is a 2-year-old Shepherd-mix up for adoption through the Humane Society of West Michigan.

Ernie is a 2-year-old Shepherd-mix up. Staff say he loves his canine friends and needs to go to a home with another dog.

Ernie is blind in both eyes and needs extra guidance. He is heartworm positive so his new family will have to bring him to HSWM to complete his final treatment. He also enjoys older, respectful children.

If you're interested in Ernie, you can visit him at the Empty the Shelters event on Saturday, May 5. The HSWM is located at 3077 Wilson Dr. NW in Grand Rapids.

The HSWM will be taking pre-approved applications only from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will be open to the rest of the public from 12 to 4 p.m. Puppies and kittens will not be available at the event.

The Bissell Pet Foundation has found that waiving fees motivates quality adopters, with more than 6,000 pets adopted in Michigan alone in the last two years.

There are participating shelters all over the state. To find one near you, click here.

If you can't make it to the Empty the Shelter event but still want to meet Ernie or other pets up for adoption through HSWM, you can visit their website, call them at 616-453-8900 or come in Tuesday through Friday between 12 and 7 p.m. or Saturday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
