Depression affects men differently than women

13% of men suffer from depression. Sometimes we don't think about checking in with our guys because they don't tell us when they're feel depressed.

November has become a month dedicated to Men's Health Awareness. Many men that don't normally have mustaches are growing facial hair or at least trying to. It's designed to draw attention for the need for men to take care of their health.

And that includes their mental health. Depression does affect women more. About 20% of women suffer from it. But 13% of men do as well. And sometimes we don't think about checking in with our guys because they don't tell us when they're feel depressed.

And there are signs in men that are a bit different from women when it comes to depression. Here are a few:

  • Stomach or back ache
  • Irritability
  • Anger
  • Drinking too much

These are signs that are a little different in men than women. If you notice a change in behavior for more than two weeks ask them if everything is ok. And don't be afraid to pry a little. This is the pinnacle moment when it can literally be the difference between life and death. Statistics show 80% of the time when someone reaches out to a person who is depressed they will talk.
There’s a new website in Michigan specifically designed for men and mental health.

It's called Healthy Men Michigan and it walks you through a mental health screening. The program is completely anonymous and confidential, and after the brief questionnaire you get your results along with recommendations and resources for you to contact.
