Gaines Township Planning Commission to discuss possible Amazon distribution center

The Gaines Township Planning Commission meets tonight with a few different proposal's on their agenda, one a little larger than the others.

The Gaines Township Planning Commission meets Thursday, March 22, with a few different proposals on their agenda, including one involving an online retail giant.

"Project Rapids" is requesting an amendment from Gaines Township that would allow a warehouse and distribution center to be built on land currently owned by Steelcase Inc. Sources believe the company being represented by Project Rapids is Amazon.

The location they're interested in is a 100-acre site in Southern Kent County located at the southwest corner of 68th Street and Patterson Avenue. Plans for the site include a two-story building with an internal floor area of more than 1-million square feet, including 55,000 square feet of office space.

If the Planning Commission recommends a rezoning plan, a more detailed plan and request would go to the Gaines Township Board on April 9.

Thursday's meeting begins at 7 p.m.
