A new apartment building with ground-floor retail could be on its way to a historic Grand Rapids district.
According to the Grand Rapids Business Journal, a proposed four story, mixed-use development at 1201 Wealthy St. SE will head to the Historic Preservation Commission on Thursday for an advisory discussion.
Integrated Architecture is the architect for the roughly $4-million project by local developer Steve Bratschie, Integrated EVP Mike Corby said.
The proposed site has been vacant since the 1970s, according to city files.
The proposed building would have 2,300 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, with three floors of small format market-rate apartments, ranging from studios to two bedrooms. There are 23 planned apartments, including two studios, 18 one-bedroom units and three two-bedroom units.
Apartments will range from about 300 square feet to 600 square feet.
At the meeting this week, Corby hopes the proposed brick and wood construction will satisfy the commission.
“It’s a modern expression but sympathetic to the corridor,” he said.
Assuming all goes according to plan, Corby said construction should start by next summer.
