A signature cereal brand for Battle Creek-based Kellogg Co. has a new flavor twist.
Today the company announced the release of Cinnamon Frosted Flakes, which it called a "long-awaited innovation" largely driven by consumer interest. The cereal, flavored with korintje cinnamon and a coating to give it a frosted look, was released this month and will be widely available in stores starting in January.
Kellogg's had been teasing the release of the cereal since late last week on Facebook and its official Tony the Tiger Twitter account.
"Our goal is to deliver the best possible flavor to our fans in the best possible way," Senior Director for Kellogg's U.S. Morning Foods Research and Development team Joanna Grennes said in a news release Tuesday. "In fact, cinnamon ranks as the top flavor request among Frosted Flakes lovers, so this innovation made perfect sense. Fan input was the driving force of the Cinnamon Frosted Flakes development process – it truly was a flavor developed for them."
Frosted Flakes, once known as Sugar Frosted Flakes, is one of the company's oldest brands, a variation of the company's original product, Corn Flakes. It ranked second to General Mills' Honey Nut Cheerios in total sales among cold cereal brands a year ago, according to market research company IRI.
