State leaders are promoting Michigan's growing role in the defense industry.
Lieutenant Gov. Brian Calley visited GE Aviation on Wednesday, Nov. 2, to boost awareness of the a new project called "Protect and Grow."
The defense industry is responsible for more than 105,000 jobs across the state, with a $10 billion payroll. Calley says the state wants to get more defense work to the state, and the key is spreading the word about Michigan.
"There is a lot of excitement around better positioning Michigan to get to this point, but one of the obstacles is people are just pretty shocked," Calley said. "The footprint we have in this area is somewhat unbelievable.
