Ford CEO discusses driverless technology at Economic Club of GR

After an Uber self-driving car hit and killed a pedestrian in Phoenix last night, Hackett was asked if he thought driverless technology was moving too fast.

Jim Hackett, the CEO of Ford Motor Company, spoke at the Economic Club of Grand Rapids on Monday, March 19.

The company plans to have a fully autonomous vehicle in operation by 2021.

But after an Uber self-driving car hit and killed a pedestrian in Phoenix last night, Hackett was asked if he thought driverless technology was moving too fast.

"It needs to evolve in ways it improves its safety and the Ford brand really stands for that so our obligation is to get the technology right and safe for our customers," said Hackett.

Hackett has been leading Ford for about 10 months, prior to this he was the interim athletic director at the University of Michigan. He retired from Steelcase in 2014 after 20 years as the CEO.
