The state of Michigan is reminding people to be careful when paying at the pump for gasoline.

According to a news release from the state, inspectors discovered five credit card skimmers last week. Three were located at gas stations in Howell and two others in Stockbridge, both southeast of Lansing.

Criminals use the devices to steal your credit card information. Reports of the crime broke out in the Grand Rapids area in 2015.

Investigators say skimmers can be installed in seconds and can quickly steal vital information.

As a consumer, you can protect yourself by checking to see if the security tape some gas stations put on their pumps is broken and by regularly reviewing your credit card statement for purchases that you didn't make.
