A 47-year-old man is in the hospital following a shootout with police in Battle Creek.
It all began when the man forced his way into a home on J Drive near 14 Mile Road in the city around 11:50 pm.m Saturday night. Deputies tell WZZM 13 the man used to live in the home.
The suspect forced his way inside and retrieved a handgun. The current resident and the intruder got into a confrontation, and one shot was fired, but no one was injured. The suspect then took off in a vehicle.
A description of the vehicle was sent out and a Michigan State Police Trooper saw it. Law enforcement attempted to make a traffic stop just after midnight Sunday morning, but the driver did not stop. He was pursued, until he stopped the vehicle at the corner of Elm and Van Buren.

When the suspect stopped, he opened fire on the State Trooper and the sheriff's deputy following. Both the trooper and deputy returned fire, firing dozens of rounds.
Deputies say the suspect was struck in the hip and the torso. The trooper and deputy were not hurt.
The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment.
