How can one stay in work mode during March Madness? Work-in!

Instead of workplaces incurring a bunch of vacation time and sick calls, so employees can spend two days bingeing basketball, why not allow people to work while watching the games?

A recent study estimates that nearly 20 million American workers will participate in March Madness office pools this year.

Instead of workplaces incurring a bunch of vacation time and sick calls, so employees can spend two days bingeing basketball, why not allow people to work while watching the games?

Friends of Grand Rapids Parks hosted a work-in event Friday at the 7 Monks Taproom in Grand Rapids.

"Everyone is here working and spending time together and watching the games to benefit our organization," said Marissa Visser, event coordinator for Friends of Grand Rapids Parks. "A lot of people like to spend time outside of the office for these basketball games so it really wasn't hard to get people to come out."

Visser estimates that 50 people from 15 different area businesses participated in the work-in, which started at noon and ended at 5:00 p.m.

"With this much success, we want to keep it going for years to come," added Visser.

Friends of Grand Rapids Parks is a non-profit organization that works closely with the city of Grand Rapids to organize park activation events and plant trees in parks. All of the proceeds from Friday's work-in event went to Friends of Grand Rapids Parks so it can continue those efforts for the community.
