TrueNorth Community Services handed out more than 500 coats in Newaygo County on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The annual giveaway had people waiting for up to two hours outside the TrueNorth Service Center.

“We had lines that were wrapped around the building," said Phil Gabel the Volunteer and Special Projects Coordinator for TrueNorth.

The Coats for Kids (and Adults) program is to make sure people in Newaygo County stay warm during the winter.

Kate McCarthy came to the distribution event because she has seven people in her family who needed warm coats. "I’m really appreciative of everybody at TrueNorth for offering programs like this. You have no idea,” she said.

In 2016, there were 360 participants in the coat distribution event.

The coats came from a month-long donation drive across Newaygo County.
