Attorneys for four West Michigan men are negotiating their future with the Ottawa County Prosecutor's Office after all each were arraigned on poaching charges.

The hunters allegedly used corn as bait to attract ducks in early October and ended up killing nearly 60 ducks near Coopersville.

The four men charged are:

  • Tyler Meerman, 24, Conklin
  • Justin Beckman, 20, Coopersville
  • Colson Modderman, 22, Wyoming
  • Michael Sorenson, 20, Marne

According to Lt. Gerald Thayer of the DNR, all four men are charged with hunting illegally over bait and with taking over the limit of ducks. Thayer says Beckman is also charged with having a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle.

If convicted, the men could have to pay up to $29,000 in restitution.

Thayer says defense attorneys and attorneys for the Ottawa County Prosecutor's office are negotiating this case.

Conservation Officer David Rogers counts the ducks taken after receiving a report of possible poaching Sunday morning.
