A Barry County man was arraigned Monday, June 12 on multiple charges stemming from an early Sunday shooting that left his wife dead and a second person injured.

Ralph Bowling III, 40, was arraigned in Hastings District Court on a charge of open murder for the shooting death of his wife, 26-year-old Cheyenne Bowling.

Cheyenne Bowling was staying with her mother and stepfather on Bird Road in Baltimore Township where the shootings took place.

The Barry County Prosecutor’s Office says Ralph Bowling entered the home about 1:48 a.m. and allegedly shot 31-year-old Nathan Farrell in the neck. He is recovering. It is believed he then chased Cheyenne Bowling from the home and fatally shot her in the driveway.

After the shootings, Ralph Bowling went to his home on Coats Grove Road, about 15 miles away in Woodland Township, and allegedly set it on fire, according to a news release from the Barry County Prosecutor’s Office. The fire was reported about 4:41 a.m. He later surrendered to authorities.

Bowling was arraigned on charges of murder, attempted murder, home invasion and second-degree arson.

He is being held in the Barry County Jail on a $1 million bond. A condition of bond requires that he have no contact with his two minor children or with Farrell.

Bowling has a probable cause hearing set for June 21 in Hastings District Court.
