Preliminary hearing dates for the 22 sexual assault charges against Larry Nassar have been set.

The hearings will determine if there's enough evidence for Nassar, 53, of Holt, to stand trial on the charges, which are split between district courts in Ingham and Eaton counties.

The preliminary hearing in Ingham County, where Nassar faces 15 first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges, has been given two dates, May 12 and May 26. The Ingham County charges relate to seven alleged victims.

The preliminary hearing in Eaton County, where Nassar faces seven first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges, has been set for June 30, the Michigan Attorney General's Office said. The Eaton County charges relate to three alleged victims.

Nassar faces up to life in prison if convicted.

Nassar worked for decades at Michigan State University and with USA Gymnastics. The university fired him in September and he left USA Gymnastics in fall 2015 with little notice.

Since September, more than 80 women and girls have made sexual assault allegations against Nassar to law enforcement. More than 50 women or girls have filed civil lawsuits against MSU, Nassar or USA Gymnastics saying that Nassar sexually assaulted them during medical appointments and the organizations didn't do enough to protect them.

Here’s a timeline of Nassar’s decades-long career and the allegations against him

In all, Nassar faces 28 criminal charges in state and federal court.

He faces three federal charges for obtaining, possessing and destroying videos and images of child pornography.

He was charged in November in Ingham County with three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person younger than 13. A judge ruled on Feb. 17 that there was enough evidence for Nassar to stand trial in Ingham County Circuit Court on those charges, which don't relate to his role as a doctor.

Less than a week after that hearing, the Michigan Attorney General's Office, which is prosecuting the case, charged Nassar with 22 sexual assault charges in connection with his role as a doctor.
