A former Florida man who admitted to using the Internet to find children to sexually abuse was sentenced to prison Tuesday for behavior the judge called “creepy’’ and “disgusting.’’
David Claire Riggs was arrested Sept. 1 as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected Internet child predators.
He was nabbed on South Division Avenue south of 44th Street in Kentwood after meeting with an undercover officer with the intent of buying children for sexual exploitation, according to investigators and court records.
“Quite frankly, Mr. Riggs, I think maybe the best word for your behavior here is creepy,’’ Kent County Circuit Court Judge George Buth said. “It’s really disgusting.’’
Buth sentenced Riggs to between three and 20 years in prison for child sexually abusive commercial activity and using a computer to commit a crime.
“I’d like to apologize to the community,’’ Riggs told the court. “I take full responsibility.’’
Riggs pleaded guilty to the charges on Oct. 24. At the time of his arrest, Riggs had been in Michigan for four months and is listed in court records as being homeless.
Riggs, 29, came here from northern Florida and was working at a Kentwood business, court records show.
