DACA uncertainty causing frustration for members of West Michigan Latino community

Members of the West Michigan Latino community say the wait is creating a lot of uncertainty.

The new spending bill proposed in Congress is not likely to include a DACA fix.

It's now been more than six months since the Trump administration announced it would be rescinding the program which protects the children of undocumented immigrants.

Members of the West Michigan Latino community say the wait is creating a lot of uncertainty.

"It's caused a lot of stress for these young people. College is already stressful and when you add the emotional stress of not knowing what your future is going to be, and then maybe being forced to go to a country that is not really your home," said Sue Garza.

And some fear that Michigan could follow states like Arizona who tried to ban DACA recipients from having a driver's license.

"If Arizona does that, then other states may follow suit and that just creates this whole sense where young people feel like they don't belong," says Garza.

Those against the Dreamers Act say all they want is for those affected to find a legal path to citizenship instead of relying on a temporary program.

"Many of the families in question that we're talking about have applied and their status has been on hold for five, 10, I know families that have been waiting for 18 years," says Roberto Hara.
