A driver was hospitalized after a crash in Cass County when she tried to swerve to avoid hitting a deer on the highway early Saturday morning.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke reports that deputies responded to a single-car crash on M-62 south of Jefferson Center Street in Jefferson Township around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The driver, Jaquoia Weatherspoon, 25, of Cassopolis, when to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac for treatment. She was taken by Michael Vines, 31, of Cassopolis after she called him about the crash.

Weatherspoon was eventually transferred to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo for further treatment of her injuries from the crash.

Deputies say she was northbound on M-62 between Pine Lake Street and Jefferson Center Street. Weatherspoon says she swerved to miss several deer, which caused her car to leave the road and strike a culvert. Her car went airborne and struck several pine trees in the area.

Investigation shows that Weatherspoon was wearing her seat belt and her airbags deployed following the crash.

Behnke says it's unknown at this time if alcohol or narcotics played a role in the crash at all -- the incident is still under investigation.
