Kenowa Hills students travel to Lansing to protest gun violence

Twelve students and one teacher were murdered on April 20, 1999, in Columbine, Colorado.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Students around the country, including here in West Michigan, protested gun violence on the 19th anniversary of the massacre at Colorado's Columbine High School.

Twelve students and one teacher were murdered on April 20, 1999. Many students walked out to observed 13 seconds of silence in honor of the 13 victims.

Kenowa Hills, students didn't walk out. Instead, a group was given permission to attend a rally in Lansing.

"We can go out there, but I feel like it's very important for also the student body to be represented in the Capitol, too," said student Chalia Modderman. "I just feel like we need a voice. Kenowa Hills needs a voice at the rally."

"They came up just to ask me my thoughts, if it was OK, if they were to go do that," said Principal Brett Zuver. "What a wonderful thing for them to stand up and want to do that to support their students and other students."

More than 2,000 walkout events were scheduled for Friday, April 20.
