When do you want your kids to go back to school? You soon could be in charge, because of a new bill introduced at the state capitol.

The bill is moving forward, and it would allow local school district to determine when the new year should begin.

Currently state law requires classes to start after Labor Day unless the district receives a waiver from the state.

The bill was introduced by Holland state lawmaker Daniela Garcia and has won approval from the house education reformed committee. The measure now goes to the full house for a vote.

The current law went into effect in 2006.There is some opposition to changing for fear an earlier start to the school year could have a negative impact on tourism.
