When Ruth Briefling was diagnosed with cancer 14 years ago at the age of 92, her family was afraid the disease would end her life.
“I thought we were going to lose her,” says daughter Darlene Bond. “We didn’t know because of her age.”
But Friday the Coopersville woman, now 106 years old, was the oldest survivor participating in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life at Reeths Puffer High School in Muskegon Friday.
Ruth says she was in the hospital for a month after surgery to remove the cancer, but says she never gave up hope.
“I didn't because I’ve got to help my grandkids,” she explains. “See what they are going to do and keep them alive. And the Lord wants me to do something yet. I don’t what. Keep smiling, I guess.”
Ruth says all of her tests show she is cancer free. She turns 107 in December.
