FDA approves at home testing kits for breast cancer genes

Consumers should not use the results to determine any treatments or make decisions about removing breasts or ovaries.

The FDA is giving its stamp of approval on the 23 And Me at home testing kits for the BRACA1 and BRACA2 genes.

The FDA says their review of the test determined the company provided sufficient data to show the test is accurate, provides results, explains what the results might mean and were generally understood by the consumer and information on where additional information about the results can be found.

However, the FDA warns that consumers should not use the results to determine any treatments or make decisions about removing breasts or ovaries -- and they should consult their physician if the results show they are at risk.
