Nearly 10 years after the Davidson family lost their youngest brother to meningococcal disease, Nick Davidson features his story of loss in a national public service announcement.
“It was one of those shocking moments you find out your life is about to change,” Davidson said.
On the morning of Aug. 2, 2005, Davidson was awoken to his parents screaming for help. His youngest brother, Jon, 16, presented severe flu-like symptoms.
Within hours, Jon succumbed to the disease.
“One of the most shocking parts of all this was to realize that this could have potentially been prevented,” Davidson said in a PSA for the National Meningitis Association.
It took years for the family to speak openly about Jon’s death. Nick Davidson is the new Athletics Director at Aquinas College, where he now speaks to his players about the importance of vaccination.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the MenACWY vaccine to children ages 11-12 with a booster dose at age 16.
