The topic of renters insurance often comes up after fire like the one Monday at The Orchards apartments.
However, a survey on renters.com shows only 40 percent of people have a policy. According to consumer expert Clark Howard, renters insurance covers multiple things, including damage caused by fire, lightning and most weather events like wind damage.
It also covers vandalism.
Howard says it will not cover damage caused by flooding your neglect or if you damage your property intentionally.
Rob Umstead from Steenland Insurance Agency in Walker says you need to document your belongings because if something happens the burden of proof is on you.
“Sit down on the couch and make a list," Umstead said. "Look around the room and write down everything you would want to replace should something happen.”
Umstead says it is also a good idea to keep your receipts from big ticket items. He says doing so will help your policy process more quickly.
Renters insurance in Michigan costs about $207 annually or roughly $17 a month.
