A 34-year-old Battle Creek man was arrested following an argument, involving a gun, with his roommate. Later that evening, the mother of the man arrested allegedly assaulted the roommate with a hammer.

Battle Creek police were called the first time to the first block of Springview Drive at 8:10 p.m. Thursday when a man, 41, said he was punched by his roommate, 34, who then pointed a handgun at him.

The victim said he woke from a nap and heard his roommate talking to the roommate's girlfriend on the phone. The victim then began asking the roommate about his cheating on the girlfriend and the two men began to argue. The victim said he was punched several times in the face before going to another room. He said he was confronted again by the roommate, so the victim attempted to put a blanket over the roommate to stop him from punching anymore. He said the roommate then went to his bedroom and returned with a handgun, pointed it at the victim, and threatened to shoot.

The victim then left the apartment and called for police. When officers arrived, they found the roommate who said the argument began because the victim was asking for money for cigarettes, but the roommate believed it was for methamphetamine so he refused and said the victim threatened to tell the girlfriend about his cheating and then pushed him.

The roommate said he didn't have a gun and that the victim only used that allegation to cause trouble. Another resident of the apartment supported the victim's statement, and after police found a .45 caliber handgun in the roommate's car, he was arrested on a charge of assault with a firearm.

At 9:41 p.m., police were called again to the same apartment by the same victim. He said the arrested roommate's mother, 53, had come to the apartment, upset because her son had been arrested and ordered both the victim and the other resident to leave the apartment.

The victim said the woman grabbed a hammer and hit him in the wrist, but the mother said she was kicked by the victim. The third man said he was in the bathroom and didn't see the confrontation between the mother and the victim.

Neither person was seriously injured and police said they are seeking a warrant for felonious assault against the mother for her use of the hammer and a warrant for assault against the victim for kicking the mother.
