Cedar Springs community mourns unexpected loss of longtime football coach, teacher

CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. — Cedar Springs High School defensive line coach and teacher Kevin Martens died unexpectedly on Thursday, school officials announced. At this time, the cause of death has not been released.

Martens graduated from Kent City High School in 1993 and taught social studies at Cedar Springs Middle School. Martens coached the Cedar Springs Red Hawks football team for over 20 years, as well as middle school track.

Cedar Springs Public Schools said in a Facebook post that a debriefing team has worked one-on-one with students at both the middle and high school, and that the team will be available as needed Friday.

The district says their Community Resource page can be accessed to find additional support for students during this time, including a counselor or principal.
