Proposed ordinance calls for Department of Civil Rights

The goal of the proposed ordinance is to protect the people of the city from discrimination.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - LINC UP is proposing a new ordinance in the city of Grand Rapids.

The Rapidian is reporting the ordinance calls for a Department of Civil Rights, a Disability Rights Commission, civil rights investigators, strengthened prohibitions in employment, housing and public accommodation, as well as laws dictating the process for investigations into civil rights infractions.

The goal of the proposed ordinance is to protect the people of the city from discrimination. It would replace an old ordinance on the topic with more specific rules governing how the processes must be conducted.

According to Lyonel LaGrone, the Policy Liason for LINC UP, there isn't anything like it currently in place for the city.
