George Barcheski, longtime EGR football coach, passes away

He was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986.

A former East Grand Rapids football coach, George Barcheski died on Saturday, March 17.

Barcheski was a coach with EGR for 30 years before his retirement in 2000. He played a major role in shaping and designing the football program, and he led the team to multiple state championships.

The announcement of Barcheski's death was made on Facebook and was shared by East Grand Rapids Public Schools and the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation and Alumni Association.

"Coach Bar had a great impact on our students with a lifetime of outstanding coaching, educating and mentoring," said the post from EGRPS.

He was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986.

Information about Barcheski's funeral and visitation has yet to be released.
