An 81-year-old Ottawa County woman says she fell for a phone scam that cost her a significant amount of money.

She told deputies she was first contacted around July 19 by someone posing as a police detective who had arrested a friend of her son.

Specific names were mentioned during the conversation and the suspect even went so far as to put someone on the phone to pose as the person who had been arrested. The victim says that person was emotional and it all sounded convincing.

She sent money to an address in Brooklyn, New York, which according to the caller was for the arrested person's bond.

Later, the suspect called the woman back saying that the person arrested needed more money for attorney fees. Again, the woman sent money to Brooklyn.
