City leaders in Grand Rapids are exploring new ways to enforce parking rules. The city commission is considering a new system that uses automated license plate recognition.

The system would use cameras to check the plates not city employees. Josh Naramore Grand Rapids Parking Manager says the program is not complex, "There is a vehicle that is retro-fitted with three cameras so they point in every direction. You would drive through it and it would tell you is the permit in the system or not in the system, that's all it tells you. Then the person doing the enforcement would still have to issue the citation.

There will be public hearings on the new parking enforcement plan later this month.
