There is no connection between Grand Rapids' Buchanan Elementary School and a shooting in the area, which prompted school officials to go on lockdown Wednesday afternoon.

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the foot around 12:20 p.m. near the school, which is at Buchanan Avenue and Brown Street SW, Grand Rapids Police Sgt. Terry Dixon said. He was found at a house and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Police haven't yet determined a suspect. The victim is not affiliated with the school, and the shooting is a random act that happened to be nearby, Dixon said.

A staff member at the school said students were safe and OK during the lockdown, which was ongoing as a precaution with officers in the area.

Police left the scene around 2 p.m.
