A 58-year-old man has been checked into a Grand Rapids hospital after threatening to commit suicide by cop following a domestic argument.

It happened around 10:42 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016 on Palace Avenue SW, near the corner of Buchanan Avenue and Burton Street.

According to investigators, the man had said he wanted the police to come in to get him and that he wanted to die. Officers made several attempts over the phone to get him to come out of his home so he could go to the hospital.

He came out of the home twice holding a knife. Both times, police told him to drop the knife, but he refused.

The second time, officers shot him with less-lethal bean bag rounds. There are times that we have to resolve a situation quickly, but because he had a knife, not a gun, he wasn't an immediate threat. Distance did not dictate a use of lethal force. Each situation is different. But in this case, the Officer and Sergeant elected to go with the less lethal option. "

The officer's bean bag gun hit the man, forcing him to let go of the knife. He was then taken into protective custody.

No one else was hurt.
