$20M Consumers Energy headquarters coming to Grand Rapids' West side

A $20 million new Grand Rapids headquarters for Consumers Energy will house up to 275 employees and have 40,000 square feet.

Consumer's Energy announced plans to build a new headquarters in the "fastest-growing region of its company" -- Grand Rapids.

The new space is in the Circuit West area on the west side of Grand Rapids at 501 Alabama St. NW. just south of I-196. Groundbreaking will begin later this year with an expected completion by 2020.

When finished, the 6-story, 40,000 square-foot building with an onsite parking structure will house up to 275 employees.

“Our Circuit West investment already includes work underway for an innovative, more responsive and reliable electric distribution system, energy storage and rooftop solar installations,” said Garrick Rochow, senior vice president of operations for Consumers Energy. “Constructing this building within Circuit West shows our continued commitment to a prosperous, growing Grand Rapids and West Michigan region.”

Up to 275 employees from Consumers Energy's West Kent Service Center in Wyoming could be moved into the new buildling, leaving about 250 workers in that facility.
