After years of talking and planning, the renovation of the Holland Civic Center is now underway.
There is a fence around the facility and crews are removing walls and obsolete equipment.
Wednesday, June 28, members of the design team from Edgewater Resources told the Holland City Council the renovation is on schedule and on budget.
“There have been no big changes,” explained Edgewater designer Gregory Weykamp. “Which is great.”
The civic center is over 60 years old and renovation discussions began decades ago. Many are happy to see it is really happening.
“We are really excited about it,” says Victoria Vanderyacht, who lives across the street. “It’s really going to update everything and make everything look nice.”
“I think it’s great for the neighborhood,” says Mike Schultheis, who also lives nearby. “It is probably long overdue.”
If all goes according to plan, renovations should be finished by the fall of 2018.
“Two huge city blocks that really have not been utilized near to the 21st century standard,” says Holland Mayor Nancy DeBoer. “We are so excited to offer this to everybody in little over a year.”
