Holland's De Zwaan Windmill receives historic designation

Holland's De Zwaan Windmill is getting national attention. The Dutch windmill has been added to the national register of historic places.

HOLLAND, Mich. - Holland's De Zwaan Windmill is getting national attention. The Dutch windmill has been added to the national register of historic places.

It was listed by the National Park Service on April 17 on their list of historic places. The announcement was made on April 20.

The list recognizes the nation's "history places worthy of preservation," which means the De Zwaan Windmill will be protected under the National Historic Preservation Act.

The National Register of Historic Places is authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. According to the National Park Service, it is "part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources."

The De Zwaan windmill at Windmill Island Gardens has been a symbol of Dutch pride and heritage in Holland for decades. The windmill joins a few other locations in Holland that are also on the register of historic places, including: the Holland Harbor Lighthouse and the Van Raalte House.
