An Ottawa County paramedic is excited to come home for Thanksgiving. Four months ago, that was in question.
Tim Hoffman was riding in the back of an ambulance in early August near Holland when a suspected drunk driver crashed head-on into the vehicle. Hoffman, an 11-year veteran of AMR, was severely injured.
His colleague and 23-year AMR veteran, Kevin Jongekryg, also was trapped inside the ambulance and needed rescue.
The crash happened near the corner of Blue Star Highway and 141st Avenue south of Holland. Hoffman and Jongekryg were not transporting any patients at the time of the crash, and Hoffman was not wearing a seatbelt as he was moving around in the back of the ambulance.
Family and friends held a benefit concert Sunday, Nov. 20, at Ottawa Reformed Church to help pay for Hoffman's medical expenses. Last week, he received a metal plate in his head to better recover from a damaged skull.
This week, however, family expects him to be home for Thanksgiving.
More than $50,000 has been raised on a GoFundMe page for Hoffman, his wife and their child.
