One year ago today, 16-year-old Riley Hoeksema died while boating on Lake Michigan.

Today, family and friends are celebrating his life this Monday, June 19.

Hoeksema's family is hoping to make the day about random acts of kindness, and they urge the community to participate. They've placed cards out for people to take at local businesses across West Michigan, including all 12 Russ' Restaurants, the Holland Christian Schools offices and Coiffeteria Salon in East Grand Rapids, just to name a few.

Last year, Hoeksema and his friend were out on Lake Michigan near Holland State Park when their boat flipped over. The friend was rescued, and Hoeksema didn't make it.

He was a member of the Holland Christian swim team.
