Egelston Township passes medical marijuana ordinance

Egelston Township is the first municipality in Muskegon County to opt in to state rules that allow medical marijuana plants to be grown, manufactured and sold.

EGELSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - An ordinance approved Monday night in Egelston Township clears the way for medical marijuana related operations in the area.

The measure passed the township's board with a 5-2 vote.

The ordinance includes eight Class C Licenses, which allow a single license-holder to grow up to 1,500 plants. Three processor licenses, two for provisioning centers or dispensaries, two licenses for testing sites, and two licenses for two secure transporters.

"It is good to see progressive leadership," said Connie Maxim-Sparrow, a consultant who represents clients ready to begin medical marijuana operations in Egelston Township.

One of Maxim-Sparrow's clients is ready to build on a ten-acre site in the township.

"A 65-thousand square foot steel state-of-the-art advanced industrial complex that will house 4,500 plants," said Maxim-Sparrow.

The township will allow grower licenses to be stacked which will allow a license holder to grow more than 1,500 plants at the same facility.

Maxim-Sparrow says her client will be seeking three licenses. If the licenses are obtained the client would build a $7 million facility that could employ 27 people before the end of 2018.

Egelston Township is the first municipality in Muskegon County to opt in to state rules that allow medical marijuana plants to be grown, manufactured and sold.

The medical marijuana facilities must be at least 1,000 feet from a school zone and 500 feet from a church or licensed day care facility.

All of the operations have specific zoning requirements and will be subject to annual inspections by the township.

The Egelston Township Clerk says applications to grow, sell, test or transport medical marijuana will be available at the township hall beginning April 30. Completed applications will not be received by the township until May 5.
