The top festival for judging U.S.-made beers awarded two Michigan breweries with gold medals recently for an export stout and smoke beer.
The breweries were among 10 in the state to receive awards at the 2016 Great American Beer Festival last weekend in Denver.
The gold-medal-winning beers are Dirty Frank Stout by River's Edge Brewing Co. of Milford and Raucher by Wolverine State Brewing Co. of Ann Arbor. See below for the complete list of Michigan winners.
Dirty Frank Stout is a complex, roasty stout with notes of rye spice, chocolate and a hint of sweet molasses. It won bronze earlier this year at the 2016 World Beer Cup, a global competition. We featured River's Edge brewery in June as a local brewery making world-class beer. A little more than two years old, the brewery also previously won bronze at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival for Dubbel Entendre, its Belgian-style Dubbel.
Head brewer Kim Schneider previously worked at Dragonmead Microbrewery in Warren, Bastone Brewery in Royal Oak and North Peak Brewing in Traverse City, among others.
“We’re absolutely thrilled and honored by the award... Kim has done it yet again," River's Edge co-owner and general manager Ryan Wiltse said in a Wednesday news release.
The 30th annual Great American Beer Festival drew a record 7,227 entries across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. There were 286 medals awarded, according to the event website.
Wolverine State's Raucher also previously won bronze in the 2016 World Beer Cup. The smoked lager includes a base of German beechwood-smoked malt, according to a news release.
"True to its style, it boasts a balanced profile of smoke, malt sweetness and hop bitterness," according to the news release.
Wolverine State was founded in 2006 by Matthew Roy and Trevor Thrall, and Brewmaster Oliver Roberts developed the Raucher in 2015.
Founders Brewing Co.'s imperial red IPA reDANKulous, which won gold for its category at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival, took silver at the 2016 event. The piney, resiny, spicy brew with 9.5% alcohol by volume was first introduced last year.
