The Grand Valley State Community is mourning the death of a faculty member who died after collapsing on campus on Wednesday morning.

According to a post on the university's website, Steven Hecht, an associate professor of biomedical sciences collapsed while walking near the Cook-DeWitt Center on the school's main campus in Allendale Township on April 5. Hecht was 60-years-old.

Witnesses on campus say that Hecht collapsed around 11:40 a.m.

Hecht joined GVSU as an assistant professor in August 1999. Five years later, he was promoted to associate professor in the same department.

The dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is quoted in the statement saying:

"Steve was a gifted scholar and wonderful colleague," said Fred Antczak. "He was dedicated to his students, advising many who aspired to study nursing or the health professions. He did great service to his colleagues across the college, including several terms on the Personnel Committee. He will be deeply missed."

The university says that it will be reaching out the Hecht's students. At this time, neither visitation nor funeral details were made available.
