Now that the flooding across West Michigan has subsided, cities, townships and residents are starting to cleanup.

Michigan State Police is advising people to keep a few safety tips in mind as they clean up:

  • Prevent mold growth -- Make sure you clean out and dry buildings quickly in order to prevent mold growth.
  • Pace yourself and get support -- Be aware of the physical and emotional exhaustion that cleanup efforts can cause.
  • Prevent musculoskeletal injuries -- Work with other people to move bulky items and avoid lifting objects that weigh more than 50 pounds a person.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning -- Do not use a pressure washer or generator inside a home. These kinds of equipment can produce the colorless, odorless gas.

If you need help getting food, clothing, etc., call 211 for guidance and assistance.
