A woman mowing her lawn was hit and killed by a vehicle bolting from the scene of an alleged assault.

Its driver also died.

The 38-year-old male driver, a Sherwood resident, committed an assault against a 38-year-old Colon man around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 9, on Wattles near Athens roads, according to a Michigan State Police news release.

The suspect then fled the scene in his vehicle, only to drive off the roadway and hit a 53-year-old Colon woman mowing her lawn before crashing the vehicle into a tree, the release states. Police pronounced both people dead at the scene.

Troopers aren't yet sure what lead up to the alleged assault.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department is continuing an investigation into the crash, of which alcohol is considered a factor.
