The Muskegon River is expected to hit flood stage in Newaygo County by the end of Friday, causing the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for the weekend.

The county’s Emergency Services Department has warned they will decrease patrol due to hazardous conditions.

“So if you're on the water, you are at your own risk,” said Director Abby Watkins.

Wisner Canoes and other water sport rentals have been asked to suspend river activities through Sunday.

Rachael Wisner told WZZM 13 that they have been sending scheduled parties to nearby lakes as an alternative.

“It won't go down enough for us to be able to rent safely,” she said. “And without having us worry all day long. So it's just not worth it.”

If the river reaches 10 feet, the Sheriff’s Department will close all access points and put up signs that warn trespassers may be arrested.
